1241644937 2015-07-21 Orphan No Violations I was on location to follow up to complaint #5079. Complainant states that seven to ten years ago they heard an explosion and discovered the steel drain covering in the garage floor had blown out of the drain opening and was cracked in two. They replaced the cap with one that was not tight and have not had any further explosions, but Mrs. Johnston who now lives there by herself occasionally smells gas. There is a tall casing with cement in it in her yard. Division records show permit #20615 near her back yard, plugged in 1950. The casing sticking from the ground is 34 tall and 10.85 outside diameter. The casing is full of concrete. The casing is approximately 25 from the house. I checked the casing and the area around the casing with a Honeywell PHD6 gas meter. There was no gas leaking from the casing or from the ground surrounding the casing. Vegetation is growing around the casing and there are no signs of the well leaking. I checked the drain in the garage with the gas meter and there was no detected gas inside the drain. The drain flows from the garage to the sanitary sewer. The complainant stated that there have been no issues with the casing or the drain since the explosion. As there are no indications of gas related to the plugged well as per my inspection, the complaint can be closed. I am advising the complainant that if there are any further issues regarding gas odors to please contact me.
