1475247256 2016-09-26 Orphan No Violations The landowner, Alexander Kern, contacted the Division on 9/8/16 to report a leaking gas well in his back yard. Mr. Kern bought his house in July of 2016 and discovered the well under a decorative outhouse. The prior landowner, T. Bentz, inherited the property from her father and had no information on the well. The house was built in the late 1800s according to Mr. Kern. Todays inspection revealed a leaking gas well in the decorative out house. The well and outhouse are located 84 behind the house. The well is located under the middle seat of the outhouse. The seat restricts access to the well head and casing. The casing diameter can not be measured accurately until access is gained to the well. It appears that the well is equipped with an approximate 6 inch diameter steel casing. This casing has at least one port on the side. Tubing is evident coming from inside the casing. It is unknown how far the tubing extends into the casing. Cement is between the tubing and the casing annulus. The cement is coated with a black paint or sealant. The tubing is equipped with a shut valve and is connected to a steel line that goes into the ground. This area has a history of historic domestic Shale wells and plugged back historic Oriskany wells. This well is not on the Ohio Fuel gas map. A gas odor is evident and the Sperian gas meter detected 50% LEL/0 ppm H2S near the top of the casing. A Right of Entry form was given to Mr. Kern and it was requested that he make the well more accessible for inspection.
