Aquatech International was founded in Pittsburgh in 1981 and has grown to become a global company, with over 600 employees.[1] It has locations across the globe, in Europe, the Middle East, India, China, Korea, and Canada, with its headquarters located in Canonsburg, PA.[2] Aquatech is dedicated to contributing to the global water industry through technological innovation, providing solutions, products and services relevant to global water and environmental needs.[3] Aquatech provides water and wastewater treatment technologies to a variety of sectors, including those of power generation, oil and gas, mining, and chemical.[4] Its customers include big name companies such as BP, Shell, Samsung, Kraft Foods-Maxwell House, and Ford.[5] Aquatech often makes appearances at conferences, workshops, forums, and tradeshows across the world to share its new technologies and innovations, strengthening its position as a global leader in water purification.[6]
Aquatech specializes in the areas of thermal and membrane desalination, zero-liquid discharge (ZLD), wastewater recycle and reuse, High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis (HERO), SmartMOD modular evaporator technology, and MoTreat and MoVap services.[7] It promises customers new technologies to enhance performance, reliability, and reduce the time and cost of installation.[8] Some examples of its innovations are BioCORE technology, proven to help achieve water quality compliance for industrial wastewater,[9] and HEVAP, High Efficiency Evaporation, technology that contributes to reliability of Zero-Liquid Discharge Systems (ZLD).[10]
In May 2013, Aquatech was required to pay an $83,000 penalty for violations at three of its water treatment facilities. Aquatech agreed to pay the penalty and as much as $30 million to upgrade the facilities to acceptable standards.[11] Aquatech had acquired the facilities earlier that month, on May 13, when it took on as a subsidiary Fluid Recovery Services LLC (FRS) the company which oversees the facilities.[12] The three Pennsylvanian facilities, located in Josephine, Creekside, and Franklin had not been discharging wastewater since 2011, when the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) requested that oil and gas producers not send their wastewater to treatment facilities which had not met the more demanding discharge restrictions.[13]
Since 2009 Aquatech has been a sponsor of the non-profit organization AQWALife (Access Quality Water Always).[14] AQWALife works towards providing safe drinking water in underprivileged areas, addressing problems such as water scarcity and water quality. AQWALife is based in Canonsburg, PA, where the Aquatech headquarters are located.[15]
