The well is on the DEP plugging list and was scored relatively higher than other abandoned wells in the region. I parked on Painter Leetonia road and hiked the Wild Apple Trail approximately a quarter mile to where Department records show the well is located. I searched the woods extensively and could not locate the well near the given coordinates. According to Department records, the well is located at 41.708574, -77.496067. Upon returning to the office I found a location plat for the well. The location plat is somewhat confusing and shows several arrows pointed to a well that is in the location listed. However the plat also shows a #2 well, the subject well, in a nearby but different location. Aerial imagery shows what appears to be a small well pad in this other location. The well was found approximately 2500' NW from the original suspected location, and the approximate coordinates are 41.711708, -77.504293. The well is about 50' in the woods on the right from the lease road entrance gate to an unconventional well pad off Painter Leetonia road. At the time of inspection; the well had 8 5/8" and 6 5/8" casing. The 6 5/8" casing has a swage and is shut in with a valve and bull plug. The annulus is open and was full of mostly ice and some water off to the one side where sporadic bubbling was observed. A field reading with an Altair 5x gas meter showed 100% LEL and 5% methane when the bubbles appeared. The well is on the DEP plugging list. |
