1523296292 | 2018-03-20 | Orphan | No Violations | I was on location to witness a contractor attempt to locate the source of stray gas, pursuant to a report by the land owner. During the activities, an uncased, approximate 10-inch diameter borehole was discovered during an exploratory excavation. The depth to the top of competent bedrock was approximately 4 feet, with clayey soil overburden. Soils in the vicinity of the well were visibly blackened and stained. The borehole was in-filled with loose fire clay and bricks. Gas was being emitted steadily from the borehole, with concentrations ranging from 100 % LEL at the borehole opening to 0 % in ambient air a few feet from the excavation. Excavation activity was being performed by RA Gibson. The contractor placed a temporary PVC pipe in the borehole and re-buried to grade with vent riser pending final disposition. |
