0874709321 2018-10-24 Field Inspected, Well Not Found No Violations I responded to a report of a natural gas leak in at 550 West 14th Street in the City of Lorain. This was formerly the Polish Legion of American Vet Post #38 and is currently being remodeled to be a residence. This inspection was conducted with City Assistant Fire Chief Cochran (440-204-2219) and the landowner, Tony Horn (440-258-6744).

A review of Division database records found API #34-093-2-0779-00-00 located on this property and shows that this well was drilled into the Devonian Ohio Shale. These records also show this well was plugged from a depth of 650 feet to surface with fire clay in 1959. Division well records contained a plat showing the well location as 145 feet north of centerline of West 14th Street and 20 feet from centerline of the alley located west of building. Based on these measurements, I located an exposed vertical section of 2-inch diameter steel pipe that came out of the ground adjacent to the building foundation, went up along the block wall, through the eves and approximately 20-inches above roof line of the building. Chief Cochran informed me that they took gas readings at the open end of the vent pipe a got a reading of 100% Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). They also checked the inside the building and got no readings of natural gas. I then suggested to the landowner, Mr. Horn, that the well needed to be exposed to confirm its location and construction and once this work was completed, it would be referred to the Orphan Well program for evaluation and possibly further action.
