0278314631 2016-08-09 Orphan No Violations I inspected this location pursuant to a complaint from the homeowner, who has been smelling gas intermittently since he bought the house a few weeks ago. He reports that the prior owner had reported smelling gas for the 30 years that he owned the house. The location of the gas odors has been on the west side of the detached garage. At the time of this inspection, the homeowner had removed several boards from a deck structure which revealed a 2 x 2 concrete pad with a 1.5 vertical pipe or possible vent. The interior of the vent was full of water with no apparent gas. Probing around the base of the concrete pad indicated a solid structure below. I recommended to the homeowner that he dig around the pad and investigate whether there is a well under the pad. I noted an occasional gas smell but nothing meter detectable.
1470053082 2016-07-29 Field Inspected, Well Not Found No Violations I inspected this suspected well location pursuant to a complaint reported by the homeowner (Complaint #5385). Complainant reported a consistent gas smell near the garage area, which seemed to be coming from under the deck, which is adjacent to the garage, I helped the homeowner pull up several deck boards and inspected below the deck. I observed some apparent oily residue and noticeable gas odors. I investigated further with a tile probe and a shovel but could not locate anything indicative of a well. I advised the homeowner that it might be necessary to remove the entire deck to facilitate further inspection, if he desired to attempt to confirm the presence of a well. I further advised that, removal of the deck and extensive excavation might not be successful at locating a well, even if one had been located there historically. I indicated that I would return to inspect, in the event that he decided to attempt to continue to investigate the source of the gas smell.
1471872013 2016-08-12 Orphan No Violations I met with the landowner at his request to assist in uncovering and identifying a suspected well on this property, near his detached garage. At the time of this inspection, the landowner had removed several boards of a deck, exposing the soils underneath as well as a 2 x 2 concrete pad with a 1.5 steel riser pipe. The landowner removed the concrete pad and hand digging with a shovel was performed. During digging and inspection, gas could be seen bubbling around the riser pipe. At around 3.5 feet, a layer of fire clay was encountered, but no casing was exposed or detected. No further digging was attempted beyond 4 feet due to the limitations of the location.
